Varqa Buehrer is a professional composer for film, TV and advertisement. At the age of four he began his musical education, and has since been introduced to piano, violin and clarinet. Born in Taiwan to mixed race parents, Varqa has travelled extensively around the world during his academic years to be trained in various culture and art forms including dance, drama and the visual arts. He received the highest distinction in the arts when graduating from high school, and was named Dean’s List of Scholars in university. He was then selected to complete the prestigious screen scoring program from the University of Southern California School of Music, began his film scoring career in LA, and has since moved to Taiwan, Beijing, and now resides Shanghai.
Since an early age, Varqa developed a special affinity for film, and upon purchasing his first original soundtrack he began imitating and composing music on the Clavinova. He later moved on to cutting and arranging musical samples and recorded sounds on a computer. During his studies, he was mentored by Emmy Award winning composer Bruce Broughton, Jack smiley and Christopher Young, and was immersed in the rich and complex tradition of Hollywood film score orchestration, score preparation and orchestral recording. Varqa was then taken under the wings of multiple Grammy Award nominated record producer Photek, and was exposed to the process of producing cutting edge electronic music. While assisting Photek, Varqa has worked first-hand on major television shows including Shonda Rhimes' 2017 production Still Star-Crossed and the Emmy winning television show How to Get Away with Murder.
Cultured by his diverse background, Varqa has developed a unique taste and style of his own, fusing modern electronic elements with traditional orchestral techniques. His artistry was recognized by the top-notch trailer music agency Pusher Music and has since been signed exclusively as a trailer composer. Varqa has an extensive portfolio in composing music for advertising, and for three years straight Varqa has scored some of the top-viewed online advertisements in China which has garnered billions of viewers. His work on the Apple CNY campaign short Three Minutes directed by cinema icon Peter Chan has garnered international acclaim and received a Bronze award at the Cannes Lions 2018. Varqa was consequently invited back to work with Apple on their following CNY campaign The Bucket, directed by award winning director Jia Zhangke. Other major brands Varqa has worked on include Samsung, Volkswagen, Bank of China, New Balance and Schweppes… etc.
Varqa is currently composing the score for upcoming major feature film Better Days (少年的你), directed by Derek Tsang (曾国祥) and staring Golden Horse Award winner Zhou Dongyu (周冬雨) and teenage superstar Jackson Yee (易烊千玺). He is also attached to compose the online dramatic series Ai在西元前, directed by Kennan Zhou (周楠) and starring major stars Rhydian Vaughan (凤小岳) and Hsu Wei-Ning (许玮甯).
